Storm damage

This is our neighbors house.. you can't really see it as the tree that crashed through their roof is on the back side of the house and this pic is of the front. All you can see is the tree branch poking over the top of their roofline. Some crazy crazy weather last night!!!

It wasn't bad here in RI but everyone from MA was talking about it on Facebook. Some BIG trees fell down and everyone lost power. Crazy.

Found your blog by looking for creative ways to use storage/areas in the eaves of a cape cod. We have a modular cape cod coming in 2 weeks. We will have about 3 weeks after that to get the upstairs completed (roof comes in flat) so we can get it appraised and get our mortgage 'done' by mid April. Needless to say we're in a time crunch, the weather in the midwest has been horrible for construction. How did you figure out how to use all that space? Did you use a book or just 'free hand' it?

We have something else in common, I cloth diaper my little one too.

Any suggestions you can give us would be great. We will have 2 BRs that both have dormers, a bathroom (that's in a shed dormer out the back) and a somewhat open stairwell. We're trying to figure out how to build the walls to have 2 nice sized rooms, but not just 'lose' the space that's at the top of the stairs, either. Our place is 28x48 and the BRs would be on opposite ends of the upstairs. One is a little closer to the bathroom so we have a 'hallway' type of situation. Is there 'lost' space where your stairs meet the hallway, or do you have plans for that too? We were thinking of building cabinets into that upstairs 'hall' between the rooms into the knee wall and then have play area up there, possibly by adding another railing and making an L shape around the stairs for sneaking in a bean bag chair to read on, etc...

Love all your craftiness!

I am having a hard time picturing your layout as you describe. if you can send me a drawing of the dimensions and where the dormers are and such, I can probably help come up with some ideas.

Our house is much smaller than yours (24x30) and we don't have any dormers, so you are in a much better position than us. But at the top of our stairs we have a landing area and hallway type situation because of the 1/2 bath we added.

We built in shelving and a 2-drawer filing cabinet there. Our chimney takes up space in that area as well which is why we have the flat wall going to the bedroom.

You can see the latest pics of the top of the stairs and built-in shelving on the blog.
